‘Twas the night before kindergarten…

Gymnastics was a hit, as expected. And not only was it a hit, but the coach had great tolerance for the exuberance of my five year old. I was worried they’d spend a lot of time doing boring stretches and whatnot on the first day, but no, they tumbled all over the place. Unbeknownst to me, I managed to choose the only brown instructor in the school and my son happened to be the only brown child in the class (of seven). I kind of wonder if that had anything to do with his attentiveness to my son but either way, yay for positive role models for my son!

We went out for a gymnastics-was-a-hit/first-day-of-school-tomorrow celebratory dinner and managed to run into about three 100 families from my five year old’s preschool. They all wanted to know where he was starting kindergarten and their faces all froze into a smile when I revealed that we were headed for the crazy hippy school, and then they wanted to know if my two year old would be starting the preschool soon and I said, “Not if I can help it!” “No, he’s a little too young yet.”

We finally got home where I discovered that I was right about the school lunches! Or mostly right anyway. Or kind of right. I don’t know about organic, but almost every lunch includes at least one item that is locally produced, usually more, there is some presence of whole grains (hamburgers on multi-grain buns, teriyaki with brown rice), and there is a vegetarian option at every meal (which often looks better than the “meat” option). I can’t say that I feel too thrilled with some of the lunch options (there’s a lot of breaded chicken and breaded fish and if he eats them for lunch I can’t very well serve them for dinner now can I?!?) but they serve three to four servings of fruits and veggies with every meal and that will make my five year old happy, so lazy mama school lunches it is!
